Meet Dr. Etta Gantt!

What's your professional background?

I received my master’s and PhD at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

While in Knoxville I received my license as a professional counselor, working

in all kinds of settings including juvenile court, prison, non profit, and college

counseling. I love working with people of all backgrounds!

What do you love about your work?

My favorite part is getting to know the unique complexities of each person I work with. I love being surprised by people! We all are so much more than we appear at face value.

What drew you to becoming a therapist?

Since I was a kid, I wanted to be in a career where I felt like I got to know and help people. I remember saying, “I want to be a psychologist so I can talk about people’s dreams with them!” Then I was a camp counselor in high school and college and I felt more drawn to the idea of being a counselor and providing unconditional positive regard as a career.

What’s your speciality?

I love working with people with all kinds of experiences. But I also specialize and have significant experience in working with people with grief and trauma.

What’s your treatment style?

I operate as a “person-centered counselor,” which means my focus is building a relationship and trust with my clients and working together to decide how far and deep we go in each session.

Most likely to discuss during a treatment?

I am most likely to start with what is weighing on you the heaviest. Releasing these heaviest burdens can relieve some of our symptoms. This can clear up space for what may be the smaller pieces that are directing us in ways we don’t realize, to change our behaviors.

Hobbies outside of work?

I love to exercise, go on walks, do yoga, read, and be outside. I also love to travel when I can. I believe the world is supposed to be explored!

What is your favorite self-care practice/coping skills?

Being social and around friends and family gives me the connection that helps me connect to purpose. Yoga, massages, and taking care of my body helps me to relieve stress and process difficult emotions I’ve been storing.
